Oakland: The West Coast's Hidden Jewel

29 Jul 2010

There are few places in the country that offer travelers as much as the Bay Area in California. The beautiful scenery of the countryside, the famed Napa Valley wine making region and the Pacific Ocean are all within reach for those in the area, to say nothing of Oakland and San Francisco themselves.

Oakland is usually overshadowed by San Francisco in terms of tourism, but the city has much to offer as well. One of the most unique places for travelers to Oakland to visit is the U.S.S. Potomac. Termed the Floating White House by the press, this 165-foot boat served as Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidential yacht but now it serves as a museum dedicated to the great president and his accomplishments.

Those who are looking for something a bit more modern than visiting a floating musuem may want to check out the Chabot Space and Science Center. This 86,000-square-foot facility contains the largest public telescope in the U.S., giving most visitors their best chance to see the stars up close. The center also houses a 230-seat planetarium and a number of hands-on science and technology exhibits.

Oakland is more than just a place to visit tourist attractions, it is also an excellent place to conduct business. The city is home to a top-notch convention center that offers guests tens of thousands of feet of meeting and exhibition space. However, the center’s main appeal may be its location, as it is situated just ten minutes from Oakland International Airport and a number of downtown attractions.

All of the sites and business services may attract visitors to the city to book a room at an extended stay hotel in Oakland.

One of the excellent extended stay hotels in Oakland is the Lake Merritt Hotel.

According to Asia Hawkins, corporate housing manager at the facility, one of the best features at the Lake Merritt Hotel is its location. Downtown Oakland is just three blocks away, giving business travelers the briefest of commutes. In addition, it is just a ten minute walk to a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, which can whisk travelers to San Francisco in just 20 minutes. With such convient transportation, visitors may want to hop across the bay on September 20 to see the San Francisco 49ers take on the defending Super Bowl champions, the New Orleans Saints.

If its convience to downtown and a rapid transit system aren’t enough to convince guests of the Lake Merritt Hotel’s superior location, they will need only look out their window and see the wonderful views of Lake Merritt to change their minds.

The Lake Merritt Hotel has a lot more going for it than just its location, however. Hawkins says that the hotel gives guests “everything they need,” including accommodations that are actual apartments, which provide a home away from home to travelers.

Rates for the Lake Merritt Hotel are almost as attractive as the views of the lake it provides. A month-long stay in September starts at $67 per night, while a 10-day stay (the hotel’s minimum) will cost about $75 per night. In addition, the Lake Merritt Hotel often runs specials that can bring rates as low $53 per night.

Another first-rate place to stay in the East Bay area is the Woodfin Suites Hotel Emeryville/Bay Bridge. This extended stay hotel is located close to Berkeley, giving those who have to visit the University of California a great place to stay. The Woodfin offers free parking, a pool, a spa and a fitness center. In addition, the rooms are well-appointed with full kitchens, luxurious furniture and linens as well as a dedicated workspace that business travelers will surely appreciate. Rates for a weeklong stay in September start at $120 per night, while a month-long stay is only $110 per night.

Oakland may at times be forgotten, but those who visit will be surprised at its excellent tourist attractions and welcoming business atmosphere.ADNFCR-3068-ID-19913709-ADNFCR
