New Inpatient Tower Opens in San Francisco Bay Area

23 Nov 2010

John Muir Health, one of the leading healthcare providers in the Greater San Francisco Bay area, has opened a new $212 million inpatient tower at its facility in Concord, California, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

People with friends or family members staying in the new inpatient tower may be interested in finding an extended stay hotel near Concord or in San Francisco or Oakland, two nearby cities that are both easily accessible by car or public transportation.

The building, which is 172,000 square feet, represents the first step of a larger $800 million expansion of John Muir Health's Concord and Walnut Creek campuses.

The new facility, called the Hoffman Family Patient Care Tower, features 120 private rooms, a new Cardiovascular Institute and an expanded emergency department. Half of the rooms have yet to open, as they have been set aside to allow for future expansion as the building's capabilities develop and grow.

The expanded emergency department, which the source says is responsible for up to 70 percent of admissions to the hospital, features 32 private rooms and a new imaging center spread over 28,000 square feet.

The Cardiovascular Institute is especially innovative, as its allows the healthcare provider to consolidate its best cardiovascular doctors in one place. It features five cath labs, 12 pre-operative and recovery beds, a 12-bed cardiovascular-specific intensive care unit and 49 private rooms.

Mike Thomas, the president and chief administrative officer of John Muir Health's Concord campus, told the source that the consolidation of the company's cardiovascular capabilities will improve clinical results by allowing doctors and other clinicians to work together and share ideas in a "collaborative environment."

The tower is innovative for reasons beyond the healthcare it provides: it is also ahead of the curve in meeting new state safety regulations for acute care facilities regarding seismic activity. The source reports that many hospitals in California have yet to move beyond the planning stage in conforming to regulations.

In addition to the Hoffman Family Patient Care Tower in Concord, John Muir Health is in the midst of constructing a similar facility at its Walnut Creek campus. The Tom and Billie Long Patient Care Tower at Walnut Creek is expected to open sometime next spring, with construction slated to be complete by the end of the year.
