New Cancer Center in Gilbert Arizona

14 Feb 2011

Two prominent players in the healthcare industry, Phoenix-based Banner Health and the University of Texas's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, are planning on opening a new cancer treatment facility in a Phoenix suburb later this fall. Doctors, patients and their families who will be involved in the work carried out at the new Banner M.D. Anderson Cancer Center may be interested in booking an extended stay hotel in Gilbert, Arizona.

One convenient option for patients at the new healthcare facility may soon win approval from local construction authorities. The planned Residence Inn by Marriott is expected to be built adjacent to the Banner Gateway Medical Center, located near the intersection of Higley Road and the Superstition Freeway in Gilbert.

Paul Welker, the chief executive officer for Sunridge Properties, the company developing the new hotel, told the Arizona Republic that he and his team looked closely at a hotel complex affiliated with the M.D. Anderson headquarters in Houston to see how a hotel could work together with a healthcare provider.

"They own their own hotel connected to their hospital," Welker told the source. "We wanted to find out how that relationship worked."

The lessons Sunridge learned at the Houston hospital have been integrated into a list of possible amenities that will be offered to guests at the new Residence Inn. Services that have been discussed include an in-house concierge who will help guests schedule hospital appointments, phones that directly link the hotel to the cancer treatment facility, a medical library and shuttles to local shopping districts.

"This hotel will be set up so the patients will be comfortable," Welker said.

The Residence Inn will also offer its guests a range of amenities that frequently come standard with an extended stay hotel. Plans for the hotel reveal that every room would include a full kitchen equipped with granite countertops and modern stainless steel appliances. Other potential amenities may include an outdoor patio, a pool, a spa, a fire pit and a sports court.

Sunridge Properties operates twelve other Marriott hotels throughout Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. If the planned Residence Inn wins approval from Gilbert, Arizona authorities, it will become Sunridge's 13th hotel as well as the sixth hotel in general to be built in Gilbert.
