Mardi Gras Celebrations in New Orleans

31 Jan 2011

Mardi Gras, the celebration that marks the beginning of Lent, is set to take New Orleans by storm on March 8. The festivities include parades, balls, and parties, and people who participate in the event frequently wear masks, makeup and outlandish costumes. Those who want to make the most of the celebrations leading up to Mardi Gras may wish to book an extended stay hotel in New Orleans.

One such hotel is the Residence Inn by Marriott New Orleans Downtown. According to Matt Bracken, the assistant general manager of the hotel, approximately 75 percent of the guests at the Residence Inn New Orleans Downtown come to the city for business purposes.

Bracken says that the suites at the extended stay property are approximately 25 to 35 percent larger than accommodations at a standard hotel. He cites its "great set-up" and the prestige of the Marriott brand as some of the top reasons that people stay at the property, adding that staying at the Residence Inn is "more like living in an apartment" than staying in a standard hotel.

He adds that the most popular amenity at the Residence Inn is the full kitchen in each suite, which includes a refrigerator, a range and a microwave and makes it so that guests are "able to cook [their] own meals."

All suites in the hotel are equipped with high-quality bedding, free wired and wireless high-speed internet access and a TV. Guests also have access to a free breakfast buffet, a daily newspaper, an outdoor pool and the hotel's exclusive SportsCourt.

Another popular element of the Residence Inn is that it welcomes pets. In addition to having rooms that are very pet-friendly, Bracken says that the hotel is in a "great pet area" that many guests enjoy walking through with their animals.

Because guests stay at the Residence Inn for a more extended period of time, Bracken says that they frequently get to know one another. "It's a neat environment that's more apartment-style, and you get to know the people," he said. Guests frequently mingle at evening socials, which are held four nights every week and offer visitors free beer and wine.

The hotel is situated near Harrah's Casino and the National D-Day Museum, and its location near the French Quarter makes it convenient for guests participating in the festivities of Mardi Gras.

A one-week stay in March at the Residence Inn New Orleans Downtown starts from $149 per night.
