Construction of New Extended Stay Hotel in Philadelphia

9 Dec 2010

The economic crisis all but stopped the development of hotels in southeastern Pennsylvania, but construction of a new extended stay hotel in Philadelphia slated to begin by the end of 2010 will break the trend, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The new Homewood Suites by Hilton, which will reportedly cost $50 million to build, will be located in the University City area near the University of Pennsylvania. It is targeted at medical professionals, patients and their families who make longer-term visits to the area.

"We started digging and found really no place to stay for an extended amount of time," David Adelman, CEO of hotel developer Campus Apartments, told the source. "Staying in a full-service hotel can get expensive, so we knew we wanted an extended stay hotel which looks a lot like apartments."

The Homewood Suites by Hilton will feature 136 one-bedroom suites, each of which is equipped with a full kitchen. Amenities include a fitness center, free shuttle service and an indoor pool.

"The market for this product is both patients and their families... to make this a really good experience for people while they're here receiving treatment," said Adelman.

While the new hotel may not be open for months, there are many other extended stay hotels in Philadelphia.
