Buddy Holly and Business: Two Reasons to Visit Lubbock

29 Jun 2010

While some may wonder why anyone other than students at Texas Tech visit Lubbock, Texas, a closer look reveals a vibrant city with a rich culture and an excellent business environment.

It is almost impossible to talk about Lubbock without mentioning its favorite son, Buddy Holly. The rock and roll legend was born and raised in the city, where the famed leader of the Crickets also got his start in music, forming several country bands throughout his junior high and high school years.

The city of Lubbock has commemorated its most famous resident by building the Buddy Holly Center. The museum features an permanent exhibition about the life and times of the musician, from his humble beginnings through his meteoric rise to fame up to his tragic death in a plane crash at the age of 22.

The Buddy Holly Center has much more than just exhibits, however. It is the center of a rich music scene that in part defines Lubbock. Every Thursday night from June 3 to September 2, the museum hosts a summer concert series that showcases some of the best musical acts in Texas. On July 29, Mariachi Amistad will wow the audience with its masterful handling of traditional mariachi music. For those looking for something more in line with the tradition of Buddy Holly, the Colin Gilmore Band will be performing on August 5 and will provide listeners with some serious "West Texas" rock and roll.

In addition to the Buddy Holly museum, visitors to Lubbock this August may be able to sneak in a peek at the Texas Tech football team as the Red Raiders prepare for another exciting season.

While there are many things to do on a vacation to Lubbock, most visitors come to the city to conduct business, and with good reason. The city offers a multitude of resources to encourage business, and the most important might be the Lubbock Civic Center. This 300,000 square foot facility can accommodate large conventions but also can provide an excellent setting for more intimate business meetings.

With so many things going on, both business and leisure travelers may want to consider booking a room at an extended stay hotel in Lubbock.

Travelers on a budget may want to consider staying at Studio 6 Lubbock. Kids stay free at this facility, which offers a location that is central to many business and pleasure destinations. In addition to its great location, Studio 6 Lubbock has excellent rates that start at $64.99 per night for a weeklong stay in July.

Those looking for something a bit more upscale may want to consider booking a stay with HomeStyle Suites in Lubbock.

"You walk into one of our places and its like a home away from home," said Sherri Dennis, the president of HomeStyle Suites. Dennis says that the rooms have home-style furniture that is nicer than typical hotel furnishings.

About 75 percent of guests at HomeStyle Suites are business travelers, and the average length of a stay is 60 days, according to Dennis.

Dennis cites the complimentary high-speed internet and the business center as the most popular features among the guests. Dennis also says that the security offered by HomeStyle Suites is excellent, so those staying there can enjoy peace of mind.

Another thing that distinguishes HomeStyle Suites, according to Dennis, is the "typical, Southern hospitality" that is found at all of their locations.

Rates at HomeStyle Suites are handled on a month-to-month basis and this August they start at $1,650, which comes to an incredibly reasonable $55 per night, over 30 nights.

After seeing that there are so many things to do and so many great places to stay, those who once scoffed at traveling to Lubbock by saying, "That'll be the day" may now want to cry out, "Oh Boy!"ADNFCR-3068-ID-19863588-ADNFCR
