Basques and Broncos in Boise

30 Jul 2010

Those who take a close look at Boise will find a city with a lively atmosphere that is welcoming to tourists and business travelers alike.

One of the things that makes Boise such a unique and interesting place is that it is home to more than 15,000 Basques, making it one of the the largest such communities in the world outside of Northern Spain. Travelers to the city will be able to experience the culture of these people who are originally from the west end of the Pyrenees by visiting what is known as the Basque Block. This area in downtown Boise has two Basque restaurants and a traditional market, providing visitors with an authentic taste of their culture.

In addition, the area is home to the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, which offers a view of the Basque people and their impact on Idaho. Those who visit the museum in the next few months will be able to see an exhibit called “Basque Whaling: Danger and Daring on a Distant Shore,” which details the peoples’ contribution to the whaling trade.

There are numerous things to do in Boise, but right now many people in the US know the city as the home to the Boise State football team, the Broncos. Many experts have picked Boise State to be among the best teams in the nation in the coming college football season. Those in Boise on September 25 can see the Broncos take on the Beavers of Oregon State on their signature blue field, as Boise State works towards the national championship.

Boise is not only a great place to visit, but also a top-notch business destination, as it is home to a number of major companies in the high-tech and medical fields. The city is not only a great place for large companies but also for small ones, as Bizjournals named it the fifth best market for small business in the country in 2009. In addition, Boise Airport was voted the seventh best airport in the world in terms of customer satisfaction in a J.D. Power survey.

With all of the tourist activities and the welcoming business atmosphere, travelers of all stripes may want to consider booking accommodations at an extended stay hotel in Boise.
