Tourism Down in Egypt, but Government Optimistic

3 Mar 2011

After the recent uprising that threw Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak from power, many travelers have wondered how the unrest would affect travel in the North African country. Munir Abdel Nour, the tourism minister of Egypt, told Xinhua that although all of the nation's main attractions have re-opened, the number of visitors is currently around 80 percent lower than at this time last year.

Nour added, however, that he expects tourism figures to increase thanks to a series of efforts taken by the Egyptian government. In addition to funneling money into advertising campaigns touting Egypt as a safe and attractive destination, authorities are reportedly offering subsidies worth $17 million to chartered planes bringing travelers to the country.

He told the source that these programs have already begun to help Egyptian tourism recover from the revolution, as some chartered planes have started flying to Sharm el-Sheikh and destinations in upper Egypt.

"We hope that as the new season begins in September, the tourism of Egypt will fully recover and make up for the losses Egypt suffered at the end of this year," Nour told the source.

People who want to take advantage of the country's rich cultural heritage, as well as business opportunities, may wish to book a serviced apartment in Cairo. One option for these travelers is the Staybridge Suites Cairo-Citystars, which opened in 2008.

Guests at the hotel can take advantage of a wide range of amenities, including a free fitness center, a free daily breakfast, an outdoor pool and housekeeping services. Visitors can mingle at After Work receptions every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday or at weekly barbeques featuring kofta and shish kebabs. People who would rather cook in their suites' fully-equipped kitchens can shop at the Pantry, a 24-hour in-house convenience store that sells staples and snacks.

The Staybridge Suites Cairo-Citystars offers business travelers easy access to several important local attractions, including the nearby Cairo International Airport and Cairo International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Additionally, travelers can take a 30-minute taxi ride to Kahn el-Khalili Souk, a medieval market known for its bustling crowds, exotic foods and vibrant atmosphere.

A one-week stay in April at the Staybridge Suites Cairo-Citystars starts at $162 per night for a 1-bedroom suite. 2 & 3-bedroom suites are also avalable.
